DIY vs Getting Help Where You Need It

Moving is one of those tasks that everyone seems to want to do themselves, at least at first. Once you have a few moves under your belt, you will gladly hire a mover and hide at a coffee shop until all of your belongings are safely packed up and shipped to another house.
During your first few moves, something different happens. You want to do everything yourself.
For many people, moving yourself into a new home or apartment is a rite of passage. You plan your moving checklist, buy your boxes, and get down to business. Once you are ‘in the weeds’ is when things really begin to get interesting.

One Of The Missed Opportunities Of A Move – Changing Your Utility Provider

One Of The Missed Opportunities Of A Move – Changing Your Utility Provider

It seems obvious that when you move, you may have the opportunity to get a better deal on something simple like your cable bill. You may have even factored the increased number of cable providers into your move, and if you’re being honest with yourself you might even say that picking up one of the TV packages with NFL Sunday Ticket was towards the top of your moving checklist.
What most people don’t think about is another great opportunity to make money when they move. You may not realize this, but many times you can actually change your utility provider to another service and save money in the process.

A Complimentary Concierge Service and You

When it comes to getting things for free, you’ve probably heard the saying “There’s no such thing as a free lunch”, basically meaning that if you aren’t paying for something then there is a major catch to getting it. So how is it possible to operate a free concierge service, and how can you benefit from it?

In short, a concierge service helps you by taking many of the mundane items off of your moving checklist. When you are moving to a new home, there are so many things that you have to do, but that take a lot of time and don’t really add much to your lifestyle. As an example, if you were to move to an area that had two competing companies that offered heating oil services, is it really a good use of your time to take an hour or two to figure out what the difference between them is? What Internet Speed Is Right For You?

It can be easy to get carried away when choosing something like the speed of your internet. When you look through your provider’s listings, often going directly to the best DirecTV packages, bypassing the lowest options, you may think that you need the highest-speed package available. After all, you regularly rent movies on iTunes, steam them on Netflix, and keep all of your music and important documents in the cloud. Maybe you just want your Facebook News Feed to refresh at record speed, but do you really need it to?

Choosing The Right Speed For You
Choosing the right internet speed may seem like an easy task, but in reality it isn’t. Many areas offer a huge range of internet speeds, with some that are specifically designed for use by businesses with high uptime requirements. Continue reading “What Internet Speed Is Right For You?” »

Outsourcing Your Apartment Move

We all have at least one friend who likes to do everything for themselves. When you go to a restaurant, they would rather be in the kitchen cooking their meal than out at the table waiting to enjoy it. This type of hands-on approach is often considered ‘right’, because having the knowledge and the experience of doing things yourself is a great life skill.

Unfortunately, we can also take that idea a little too far. While knowing how to do things yourself might be helpful in some situations (like changing a flat tire when you break down in the middle of nowhere), in many others it can cause us to waste valuable time on tasks that we know how to do, but that aren’t worth our time in the first place. Unfortunately, that point of view can often look ‘lazy’ to those people who do everything for themselves, but it isn’t, and here’s why. Continue reading “Outsourcing Your Apartment Move” »

Take Advantage Of Home Automation Tools In Your Next Move

It’s amazing how far technology has come in so few years. For decades, the promise of a smart home has seemed just too far out of reach to really make it a reality. More recently, home automation became a great new trend, but for the most part the technology was only accessible to those who had a lot to spend, huge amounts of domain knowledge, or both. Today, you can choose to integrate a lot of these ‘smart home’ technologies in your own home. They are easier and cheaper to set-up and operate, and even the simplest technologies can help you add great new features to your home.
Smart Controls
The pride and joy of the smart home community has been the integration of ‘smart controls’ into the home. These controls will let you turn your lights on or off from anywhere, but they also have a number of other great features. You can set your lights on a schedule, perfect for when you are out of town. These systems can also adjust the heat and air conditioning in your home, reducing it during the day when nobody is home and increasing it just in time to make your home the perfect temperature when you walk in the door.

A Moving Checklist: Make it Your Easiest Move Yet

There is one simple trick that will make your move the best yet…

It’s no secret that moving to a different home or apartment can be difficult. The question that most people are asking is not whether it’s going to be hard to move, but why it’s so hard to move. It seems like the only method of simplifying your move is to hire people to do everything for you, but is that the be-all, end-all of moving?

If you plan far enough ahead, it doesn’t have to be. One of the biggest problems that most people have when moving is that the actual move itself tends to sneak up on them. Even if you’ve planned it for months, you will find that your moving day will inevitably be a stressful time, as tasks that have somehow been swept under the rug come to light and have to be dealt with at the most inopportune time. Moving Quick Tip: Focus On The Essentials

Even before you start to move, you may find that friends and family members come out of the woodwork to tell you how difficult or how stressful it will be. How is it that moving your belongings from one place to another can seemingly upend every part of your life?
The short answer is that when most people choose to make a move, they spend far too much time looking for the best TV packages and far less time organizing all of their belongings for a move. While this might seem like a good use of your time, crawling down the rabbit hole of changing over your utilities, TV packages, and other systems can really take time out of your day that you don’t have. Since those tasks are more interesting than properly packing your belongings and organizing them for the move, you spend more time on them and then have to rush to get the rest of your things packed up properly.
When you arrive at your new home, your power may be on and your internet service may be set up, but the rest of your belongings are scattered throughout the house, with no rhyme or reason. Instead of doing the same thing that everybody else does when preparing for a move, and ultimately finding yourself ill-prepared, you can make your move easier by focusing on two simple things.
